  1. Good for you starting a blog.I’m sure you will love it!

  2. Hi Viv, well done on getting started so quickly. I look forward to visiting you often and seeing your progress

  3. Oooh I like the colour of your kitchen units!!! My kitchen desperately needs decorating, but the floor is horrendous & should be done first…..anyone got a couple of grand they don’t want!

  4. I love your garden Viv.
Great idea to start a blog!
    X

  5. Hi Viv loving your blog and the pics of your lovely home. Thank you for sharing.

  6. I loev the green you have in your kitchen, and lucky you getting those baskets!

Well done on OFSTED too! :)

  7. ohhh i like that casserole dish.

    Well done of the Ofsted.

  8. Thanks Sian. I’m so glad its over.

  9. Thanks for the comments. I am hoping to be able to keep this up, so log in regularly for updates

  10. That Mill is just gorgeous, you’er lucky to have such beauty on your doorstep.

  11. Thank you. It is lovely isn’t it. The white building in the second photo is the pub, The Butt and Oyster. Its lovely in the winter with a log fire and in the summer , you can sit outside and watch all the boats on the river. Have included more information on it, on the original post

  12. Hi there – Yay another Suffolk blogger! Your garden is truly beautiful. I’m off for a browse round your blog if you don’t mind!

  13. Ooh I used to have a uniform like that (pre-children!)…

I only ever photograph without my flash in good daylight. I make sure the flash is turned off and usually always use the macro button (it comes up as a flower on my Canon screen) so it will focus up quite close. I’m quite shaky but most of mine come out ok! Bright daylight is the key though, although not direct sunlight, I never bother on dull days. Hope that helps a bit!

  14. Thanks Ruth. I’ll try that tomorrow if there is any bright daylight!

  15. Hi Viv – just popping over from the shabby chic thread! – I love your picture by the local artist and hope your dad had a great birthday – Natalie x

  16. Hi Viv,
Im too popping in from the Shabby chic thread!
Love your blog! Thank you fior adding me to your faves Ive done the same for you.
    Love love love the postcards!
Sorry your not feeling too good, take care.
    Michelle

  17. Could you use an auction sniper site to bid for you whilst you are out? You set it up with the top amount you want to bid and it does it for you automatically right at the last second.

  18. I’ve heard of them but have no idea how to use one…….maybe that’s what I should do today…find out how to use an auction sniper site.

  19. Have come to this via MSE Shabby Chic Thread.

What do you have in the wall cupboards to the left of the utility room? Could you remove the wall cupboards and put shelving all along that wall – as per Vintage Pleasure’s kitchen?

  20. You can always sent the lock ‘n’ locks to me then you don’t have to worry about storing them!!!!

  21. Sandib

Haven’t told OH yet but I am thinking of getting either a small dresser or one of those retro cupboards for there. Really need to declutter and see what I have that is essential, first

Sian…..no you aren’t getting your hands on them. Anyway didn’t you also buy rather a lot of them?

  22. I did buy quite a few but you have some biggers one – plus you can never have too many lock ‘n’ lock!!!

  23. Looks like I can!!

No, joking aside I really must start using more of them rather than just collecting them all in my utility room.

  24. you do realise it is not saturday!!!

  25. No….sorry keep thinking its Saturday!!!

  26. That’s looking fantastic. I love the colour and it’s very you!

  27. you had ore snow than us!

  28. that should be MORE know than us!

  29. There was more than enough to make a snowman. Is all melting now

  30. we only had a dusting which was gone by 10am

  31. Can’t believe its Easter Sunday and we had so much snow…….should be Christmas

  32. hi, just followed your link from mse shabby chic thread, wow, your dresser looks fab, I really like the colour

    love meg

  33. It really is looking good.I bet you are really pleased.I can’t wait to see it all dressed up.

  34. Thanks for your comments. I’m really pleased with it. Even Harry says its looking good and he was very unsure about it all at first.

  35. Its looking good mum, very you.

  36. It looks absolutely fantastic: well done! And I’ve still to finish my tiny little sewing box!

  37. Hello, Your dresser looks great. Just wondered how much paint it required?

  38. It took a 750ml can …thats all!

  39. That’s looking lovely! I hope your back feels better soon, and that you don’t get any problems with the roof leaking x

  40. Dresser looks great. I’m so pleased you achieved such an excellent result after your first doubts about the paint.

    Well done!

  41. Thanks so much for your comments. I’m really delighted with it

  42. do you want to come and tidy my craft room now!!!!

  43. No, you can do your own……

  44. I’d look on ebay for your ceramic sink .That’s where we gots ours and it worked out cheaper even with the delivery charge.

  45. Thanks for that Kirsty

  46. I thought you said you had loads?!LOL you want to see my cupboards hubby always jokes that we could feed the 5000 and they would all get a proper plate!
Only keep what you find beautiful or useful. So start by choosing your favourites and then choose out of the others which are most useful.Think about which ones haven’t seen the light of day for ages?Is it because you don’t like them or you couldn’t find them?
I love the darker wooden bowls by the way.I would say they were keepers!

  47. Haven’t photographed all. All the cream bowls, dishes I’ve automatically kept.
There is still more but I am breaking for lunch at the moment

  48. Put the ones you think you won’t use into a box, tape it up and put in the shed/loft/garage/wherever. Then, if in the next 6 months you find you DO need them/one, they are still there. If not, charity shop them.

I find it’s not the getting rid of but the decision of what to get rid of that takes all the energy.

Good luck – you will feel GOOD when you’ve done it.

    Sandie

  49. PS Just realised I’ve used charity shop as a verb – sorry – did I read somewhere you are a Head of English?

  50. lol…Sandie

I have taken the brave step of actually getting rid of some. Unfortunately the garage is full and Harry is at the moment trying to clear it so he has space to make kitchen cupboards etc. I don’t think he’d thank me for filling it up again. Also we have only just finished sorting the loft and don’t want to refill it

Trouble is I have only gone through one cupboard so far……….

  51. Those taps are lovely!

  52. Thanks, I liked them and they were on offer, so were a real bargain too

  53. bye bye kitchen as I know it!!!

  54. do you want a memento?

  55. nah i think I will cope – just about!!!

  56. I wish I could have seen them, just saw a quick clip on the news. I’m the wrong side of the country.

My son is in the RAF and he has “trained” me to look at planes.

    Alison (aka Pollybear)

  57. I’m loving watching your kitchen coming together!!

You and your man are doing a great job :-)

  58. It has to look this bad so that you appreciate it all the more when it is finished! It will be great to look back
at these pics when it is all done and laugh at how bad it was! You are doing really well!

  59. Thanks for the encouragement. Trouble is it can only be done evenings and weekends as we both work, so it’s going to drag out a bit. Hopefully it will all be worth it in the end.

  60. The chairs are looking great! How many coats of paint did you give them? How long did it take?

  61. Thanks a lot. So far have done three coats on the top and two on the bottom. Will probably need four coats all in all as I didn’t undercoat first.

  62. I love the table clothes especially the green one…just one thing…its April not March :) x

  63. But the first one tablecloth isn’t green!!!!! lol

  64. I’d say after the first day back to work you should be relaxing!

  65. That book is great.

I decided to live an as natural as possible cleaning lifestyle.
I am slowly adding recipes to my blog as and when I use them.
It is amazing what vinegar and lemon juice will cut through!

  66. These are lovely Viv. did you buy the fabric already printed with the design? Sorry but I’m a newbie to cross stitch so havent bought any fabric yet. :)

  67. No . For each of them I followed a design in a magazine. I bought the fabric, and the colours separately……works out cheaper that way [ I think]

  68. Those are lovely. My sil is right into cross stitch. She has done some amazing work, too.

  69. Thanks Denise

  70. As another Mum to a son with SLD, I have also found this story to be really upsetting. It is so sad that this poor lady got to the point where she believed this to be the best action – my heart goes out to the whole family.

I also thank you for shareing about your son. My son is still young, but I often feel scared about the future for him and so it is always nice to hear of other, grown up, children and how happy and secure their lives are.

  72. It’s more upsetting when it feels personal. I hope he will be found soon. Your son looks very happy.

  73. Lisa, feel free to contact me at any time if you want any help and advice.

  74. Hugs to you, Lisa.

  75. James’s body has been found and two charged with his murder. This has really hit me hard because it has made me consider how vulnerable those with SLD are.

  76. Some fab bargains.

  77. You have a really nice space within which to create a fab shabby chic garden. I like it how it is.

  78. Thanks for the comment. I need to get it tidied up a bit and get some more plants in pots. I’d really like a mangle but an unsure whether I can afford one

  79. Hi
I read this entry in your blog & thought maybe we worked at the same school, lol.
Although I work in school admin & am not a teacher, I sometimes despair about the thngs going wrong in schools today.
We have 2 OTT’s at school at the moment, both had only telephone interviews & both are pretty useless, not necessarily through any fault of their own.

  80. Your kitchen is going to look really nice when it is finished

    Racheal x

  81. wow – how lucky are you to have that at your back door!

  82. Whilst I don’t often leave a comment, I do look into your blog every day. I started one of my own a year or so ago and gave up pretty quickly as I rarely posted in it – so I appreciate how much one does take up your time! With a kitchen in various states of use, a full-time job, a home to shabby up and just day to day life to live, I think you are doing amazingly well with keeping a blog going as well!! :)

BTW, your garden is lovely and the view of the woods is wonderful. Looking forward to seeing how the kitchen turns out.

  83. Sorry to hear that you are run off your feet. I hope you get a bit of rest over the Bank Holiday weekend.

  84. Sounds like you are really busy at the moment. Hope you find time to relax over the next couple of days :)

  85. Gosh! Emailing the kids! The kids emailing the teachers! Never heard of that! We did have to drop my dd’s AS artwork off at a teachers house late one Sunday night, that is about as intimate it gets over here in the midlands. You are amazing, I hope all your kids get excellent grades and show what a fab teacher you are.

  86. Ah.. I bet it will be finished soon and look just lovely :)

I think your units look gorgeous.. are you still going to paint them?

    God bless, Rasp xx

  87. Yes , when the rest of the work is done

  88. Don’t forget that aside from concentrating on the house, you make some time for YOU!

Well done with the marking – phew!

    Sandie

    http://dancingonabladeofgrass.blogspot.com/

  89. Yay for it being all over.. *hugs* x

  90. You must be so relieved that it is over! My friend, who is also a teacher, has been so stressed over the past couple of weeks as well, so I understand how you feel.

It’s all over now – I reckon you should let yourself have a glass of wine (or three) this weekend to celebrate :D

  91. Oooooh, whereabouts in Croatia Viv?

We spent 10 days in Makarska a few years a go, and it was fabulous, just beautiful.

I hope you have a wonderful time, you deserve it.

    God bless, Rasp xx

  92. We’re going to Porec. Had a problem because we can only go in the school holidays and the holiday we wanted in Cyprus was just too expensive. The guy in Thomas Cook suggested Croatia and it looked good so decided to go for that

  93. Hi
I am feeling positive at the mo too! I agree its the longer nights and the ‘coatless’ weather that does it!!
Hope you don’t mind – I’ve tagged you (rules on my blog) -goodness it is shameless touting isn’t it!!
    Claire x

  94. I used to work in a primary school and it was often a relief when the holidays came round and you need the holidays as working in school is really full on iykwim.
I’ve tagged you hope you don’t mind rules on my blog.

  95. Hi there!
I was really interested to read your blog/profile.
I teach English too!! (I teach at home !)
Nice to read your blog..I will visit again! Have a good week ;-)
    Sal

  96. Estella says : I absolutely agree with this !

  97. It looks and sounds wonderful :)

  98. I have never thought of Croatia as a holiday destination! Just goes to show that you learn something every day :-)

Photos are lovely, thanks for sharing them.

  99. ditto re the weather viv x – where I am a bit further up the coast from you we are sharing the rain! x I really don’t know how much more I can stand, somehow even inside jobs seem better when the sun shines!

  100. I remember that cake stand!!!

See if you were really up to dat with the times you would realise you should have piped a buttercream icing on top!!!

  101. I know I should of done but I just wanted plain icing.

Did you remember that that cake stand can be altered so it can have 1, 2 or 3 tiers? When you were young we always had 3 tiers

  102. Yum.. pass one (or 2 or 3 or..) my way! :)

    Love, Rasp xx

  103. I often wondered who the ‘fool’ was that decreed two days weekend and five days work..he (it must’ve been a he!) surely got it the wrong way round! ;-)

  104. Seems wrong that you should have to plan lessons for cover staff! How annoying!
Crikey…I don’t know how you can go home and be so domesticated…I used to collapse in a heap! LOL
    Sal;-)

  105. Setting cover work for absent colleagues is one of the downsides of being Head of Department.
I must admit I do get extremely tired at times and often just collapse

  106. Your cakes have got me in the mood for making cakes myself. I am going to make a cake for saturday and then some fairy cakes.

  107. Its great to see your kitchen coming along so well. I’ve been in the same boat as you recently and I know how much you miss the convenience of kitchen cupboards, worktops and a working sink!

  108. I remember our kitchen being done – never again!! Its looking good Viv, the units you have chosen are lovely x

  109. Thank you for your encouragement today, Viv. I am shattered, but on a high! Your kitchen is looking stunning. It’s all come together brilliantly.

  110. I used to enjoy going to festivals like that. I have not been to one since I went to Cambridge a few years ago.
    That was superb.
My daughter went to Download this weekend! ;-)
    Sal

  111. Think the last Cambridge I went to was in 2003 or 2004. It got far too large for me. I enjoy the smaller festivals more.

  112. We have a Crabtree and Evelyn shop in Exeter, right next to The Orange Tree (my fave shop!!),so I often go in and browse! Gorgeous stuff!!;-)

  113. What a bargain – the mags alone are a good buy on subscription. I was given my first ever magazine subscription for a gift at Christmas and I can’t tell you how giddy I get to get something nice every month in the mail. I am going to ask for more this year. I love gifts that last all year long.

  114. Yes but you have those extremely long summer hols to look forward to soon ;-) LOL!

  115. Trouble is quite a few days of that will be spent at work preparing for next year and completing paper work when the exam results come in.
The difference of course is that I can choose my hours rather than it being forced upon me. Also some of the work I can do at home…..

  116. I LOVE your garden! We don’t have one, having built our new home nearly two years ago. I dream now of buying a ‘ready made’ home with a ‘ready made’ garden and yours is exactly how it would be!

  117. Hope you will feel better soon;-)

  118. I hope so too – not long until the holidays, maybe you can rest more then :)

  119. In the village where I once lived, there was a little cottage and the lady would always put loads of old boots along her front wall and fill them with plants..it all looked so lovely in the summer.
Glad the birthday boy enjoyed himself. ;-)

  120. Glad they arrived and you like them. I hope you have a wonderful day tomorrow.

  121. Hope you had a good time ;-)

  122. Lovely!

    Happy birthday Viv!

    love, Rasp xx

  123. hey, has anyone been on http://www.pollthepeople.com ??? you enter your top 5 books and compare them with others’, compiling a definitive global list of top books.
amongst a very ecclectic list of the top books of all time, Audrey niffenegger ranks highly – good to see something other than Harry Potter!
i’m working for the site this summer and i just got niffenegger’s top five books which will be on the site soon so check up in a day or two!

  124. Hey that is a bit of a list Viv!

The shabby sheep are missing you over in the cafe, you got the new URL?

    How is the kitchen going?

    xx

  125. I love the shed! Just the sort I’d love in my garden! ;-)

  126. Oh, I wish I had known you were in Stokes Bay, as I’m a Gosport girl :) . I love your blog, and would have loved the chance to pop in and say ‘Hi’.

Enjoy your time off work during the summer:)

  127. Winchester is one of my very favourite places! ;-)

  128. The benefits of cardio to a diabetic in controlling blood glucose levels are enormous. People think that all they have to do is take their medicine and that’s all they have to do. But cardio exercise can help not only control your blood sugar but your blood pressure and weight as well. Actually I think exercise can probably help a lot of medical conditions that people have today. Of course, this doesn’t mean you can stop on the way home from the gym and get a large pizza. A proper low fat, low carb, high protein diet is also needed to control blood sugar, blood pressure and your weight. Not to mention, smoking. Smoking is one of the major contributors to high cholestorol levels in people today. I could go on and on. Visit my site by following the link connected to my name for more information on diabetes and how it affected me. Hopefully you will not go through what I did. It sounds like you caught it in plenty of time. Just don’t blow things off when you feel better. Develop a healthy lifestyle centered around a low fat, low carb and high protein diet and daily cardio exercise.

  129. sorry to hear you haven’t ben well recently and hope the weight loss and excericise helps for yur next test.
    Take Care
    Sharie

  130. Hope you get everything done you want to Viv :)

  131. Looks lovely Viv – Rovinj especially looks lovely.

I did the day trip to Venice when I went to Yugoslavia (as it still was at the time) many years ago – lovely place too.

  132. oh poor you, i hope you manage to get things sorted with your diet. (((Hugs)))

Now what do you mean get rid of stuff from your craftroom, Yikes!!!! i would rather get rid of half the furniture than get rid of anything in my craft room!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now i only live an hour away from you so i may do a midnight raid on your freecycle bits. *smile*

I really do hope you are working stuff out with your health, i will be thinking of you, Honey.
    Love and Hugs. X x X x X x X

  133. Hope you are feeling more motivated. Sometimes I just don’t seem to have any get-up-and-go either. Perhaps it is the weather!

  134. sorry to hear about your BT problems. We had problems with them ourselves recently and it was a nightmare to sort out (what is wrong with british call centres where they can understand you?)

  135. Well done Viv …. doesn’t it feel so good when you do things like that … one of those something from nothing achievements.

  136. WOW….that does look good, given me some ideas now.
    well done,

  137. some lovely things there.. i love the little heart….

  138. Lovely Viv, i could do something like that, though i know it wont look as good as yours, i have been thinking about getting all my card stock and bits put away neatly [its scattered everywhere atm] i could wrap it in nice covered binders, yay, thanks Viv. X x X

  139. Oooh that is a lovely swap Viv, i love the pin cushion, so sweet. X x X

  140. Hi Viv..seems ages since we’ve crossed posts! Hope you enjoy your break though & look forward to catching up soon.

  141. I’ll try and scan the page for you(from Family Circle)..if not you can send me your address and I will post a copy to you. Sal ;-)

  142. Your Grandsons are gorgeous!
Roll on the holidays eh?!! ;-)

  143. A very kind thought ;-)

  144. It’s so fascinating!
I started to do the same thing a while ago..I traced my mother’s side and got right back to the 1500s!!
I found a distant cousin in America who emailed me lots of info as she too was tracing her family tree!
I’ve stopped for a while.. as it all got very time consuming!
    ;-)

  145. What lovely photos! I, too, have been doing my genealogy over the past 4 years and it is fascinating … the more you uncover the more questions are raised!

I have put a few characters from my family history on my blog to share them with my family but there are loads more to do and, as Sal says, it’s all very time-consuming!

    Good luck with yours.

  146. Hope the FC cake turns out as well as the snowman cake all those years ago!! ;-)

  147. Hi. I’ve just stumbled across your blog and think it’s great. Would you mind if I added a link to it from my site?

I too am a summer person and for the first time this year tried a SAD lamp with good results.

  148. I remember visiting Snape Maltings, years ago, when my sister lived on the Suffolk/Essex border!
My daughter was only four months old and Nich was not even born then!
    ;-)

  149. I LOVE SWAPS so much, well done Vivw, everything looks lovely.

  161. Hi there…fascinating stuff!!
When I read your message on my blog,I looked up your book on Abe Books. There are a few copies on there ;-)

  162. Thanks for that , Sal. It is the same book. Have started to read it again this afternoon and the language and phraseology certainly date it. My copy is in quite a bad condition as it was certainly well loved by me and my uncle but also possibly someone else before him

  163. Please include me too :)
    All lots are lovely :)
    Claire x

  164. Looking forward to seeing it stocked with all your goodies!! ;-)
